The Smartphone industry has been waiting to see what OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei will do with his new company, Nothing.
And while the release of their first product, The Nothing Ear 1 was a bit lackluster, Nothing is aiming for the stars with the upcoming release of their first Smartphone, The Nothing Phone 1
Nothing always said that “2021 Was Just a Warm-up” as well as “It’s all about 2022” which shows that they were planning on a flagship release this year.
With their March 23rd Keynote, They unveiled what they were talking about prior to the event, and to nobody’s surprise, it ended up being a teaser to the Nothing Phone 1, and its new Operating System, called Nothing OS, which is said to be a “fast and smooth” experience and have an “Iconic Design”, which is almost identical to the OnePlus One’s OS which was said to be “fast and smooth” and have a skin close to stock android which consumers grew to love.
Smartphone manufacturers have always taken inspiration from their competitors, like removing the headphone jack firstly initiated by Apple, but given Carl Pei’s Involvement in both companies, it’s apparent that Pei is using some of his knowledge from OnePlus in the upbringing of his new venture.
The OnePlus One was a heavy hitter in the market due to its price, a whopping $299 in 2014 was almost unheard of for a Smartphone of this quality.
Manufacturing Costs are increasing due to the cost of Proccesors, Supply Chain Issues, and the Worldwide chip shortage, but producing a cheap phone will be a Pivotol point in the Phone 1 Undercutting the market, like their predecessor
Smartphone Companies have been producing cheap phones as a way to get their unknown name into the market for a long time, as Xiaomi did with the Mi 1, and Realme with the Realme 1.
Nothing should also use this strategy, since they’re aiming to compete with the biggest names like Apple, by creating a whole ecosystem with their products.
if they decide to go the “Pricey and Powerful” route for their new Smartphone (Like the RED Hydrogen) They’d miss out on a large customer base that doesn’t buy the ultra-premium Android flagships like the S22 Ultra, and the OPPO Find X5 Pro and instead buy cheaper Flagships from Xiaomi, like the 11T Pro and Realme, with most of their budget phones.
Nothing OS
Nothing Should also focus on making the new Nothing OS as powerful as possible and unlike anything else, since OnePlus’s Oxygen OS was one of the biggest pillars in the OnePlus One’s Advertising since it was the closest you could get to Stock android with a “Fast and Smooth” experience, short of buying a Pixel Phone.
If Nothing is able to release a Smartphone Flagship competitor with a comfortable price and good software without lacking features like QI wireless charging, Nice Cameras, and Software Support, then they’ll be on the trajectory that OnePlus were previously on when they first got into the market.
Nothing also reportedly have 5 products currently in development, but those are kept under wraps, with little to no information about what the products could really be. (Maybe a SmartWatch?)
